SW Alder Street Bikeway Project

Transportation
Engineering And Design
The final phase of the SW/NW 20th Ave Greenway project connects the SW Alder Street and SW 17th Avenue bikeways with a two-way bike lane on SW Alder Street between SW 16th and 17th avenues. Parking and operational changes on SW Alder Street may accompany the project.
Final element in design; construction tentative for summer 2026

What's Happening Now

(1/13/2026) The last part of Phase II project work is in design with construction tentatively scheduled for summer 2026. This component will connect SW 16th and 17th avenues along SW Alder Street. Work was postponed while private building construction was underway on SW 17th Avenue.

Project Design: SW Alder Bicycle Facility

PBOT is proposing a change to how SW Alder Street operates between SW 16th and 17th avenues. A new, wider bike lane will connect people using north-south bikeways between the Goose Hollow and Northwest District neighborhoods. This change will require removing parking on one side of SW Alder Street between SW 16th and 17th avenues.

Elements of the project include:

  • Two-way buffered bike lane on the south side of SW Alder Street between SW 17th and 16th avenues, with identifiable green bicycle markings linking to the SW 16th Avenue bikeways
  • One vehicle travel lane for eastbound traffic
  • One vehicle parking lane on the north side of SW Alder Street
This diagram shows proposed changes to SW Alder Street from SW 17th to 16th avenues, including a two-way bike lane, one vehicle travel lane, and parking on the north side of the street.

SW/NW 20th Avenue Bikeway Project Description

The SW/NW 20th Avenue Neighborhood Bikeway was designed to improve conditions for biking and walking by slowing auto traffic speeds, reducing auto traffic volumes, upgrading crossings of busy streets, and creating new connections to existing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure on or adjacent to SW and NW 20th avenues.

Project construction has been a multi-phase process, with some elements installed as early as 2019. The final component of work, a two-way bicycle facility on SW Alder Street between SW 16th and 17th avenues, is now in design.
