The final phase of the SW/NW 20th Ave Bikeway project plans to improve bicycle connections by installing continuous buffered bike lanes on SW Alder Street between SW 17th and 15th avenues, and on SW 15th Avenue between Alder and Salmon streets in the Goose Hollow Neighborhood.

UPDATED: What's Happening Now
(4/23/2026) PBOT heard feedback from Goose Hollow residents, businesses and travelers that initial project designs did not meet several important community needs, including clarity of routes around the neighborhood, accessible curb-side parking, and reducing speeds on SW Alder Street.
Design adjustments have been made that help address community feedback. On-street parking is not impacted. The design meets project goals by providing continuous and comfortable biking connections in the Goose Hollow neighborhood. Residents and businesses will receive a letter in the coming weeks with details about these changes.
This is the last part of Phase II project work. Construction is tentatively scheduled for summer 2026.
UPDATED: New Project Design: SW Alder Street and SW 15th Avenue Bikeway Facilities
In December 2025, PBOT shared proposed changes for SW Alder Street between SW 17th and 16th avenues. After receiving feedback from residents, we have updated the design.
The new design will not change parking and will create safer conditions for all road and sidewalk users and provide consistent and continuous travel lanes for vehicles and bicycles.
Elements of the project include:
- Continuous buffered bike lane on SW Alder Street between SW 17th and 15th avenues
- Continuous buffered bike lane on SW 15th Avenue between SW Alder and Salmon streets
- One dedicated vehicle travel lane for cars and trucks on both SW Alder Street and SW 15th Avenue
- No parking changes

SW/NW 20th Avenue Bikeway Project Description
The SW/NW 20th Avenue Neighborhood Bikeway was designed to improve conditions for biking and walking by slowing auto traffic speeds, reducing auto traffic volumes, upgrading crossings of busy streets, and creating new connections to existing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure on or adjacent to SW and NW 20th avenues.
Project construction has been a multi-phase process, with some elements installed as early as 2019. The final component of work includes changes on SW Alder Street between SW 15th and 17th avenues, currently in design.
Completed Work Since 2020
Phase I work completed:
- Paint and post curb extensions at NW Everett, Lovejoy and Northrup streets.
- Curb extension and crosswalk at NW Glisan Street and 20th Avenue.
- Installation of traffic operation changes to protect the neighborhood character of NW 20th Ave at NW Raleigh and NW 20th restricting north-south access and NW Everett and NW 20th restricting north-bound access.
- Speed bumps, greenway identification signs, and pavement markings.
Phase II work completed:
- Neighborhood greenway on SW 18th and SW 17th avenues between SW Mill Street Terrace and SW Madison Street.
- Buffered bike lanes and shared street bikeways on SW 17th and 16th avenues between SW Salmon and Alder streets (some blocks are completed, others awaiting private construction to be completed).
Project Funding
The project is partially funded by $200,000 from the Fixing Our Streets 10-cent gas tax program. Additional funding from Transportation System Development Charges.
