Project Description
PBOT will add centerline rumble strips and high visibility striping on SE Foster Road between SE Barbara Welch Road and SE Jenne Road to address head-on and sideswipe crashes. PBOT will add shoulder signs to address road departure crashes. Rumble strips will only be added on segments with solid yellow line striping.
What are rumble strips?
Rumble strips are patterns of grooves on a roadway surface that create a physical vibration and audible sound when a vehicle's tires pass over them.
Why rumble strip?
This sensory feedback serves as a safety measure to alert drivers, particularly those who are drowsy or distracted, that they are drifting out of their lane of travel. Rumble strips help drivers self-correct their steering, which can prevent crashes, and they are particularly effective at reducing roadway departure crashes and head-on collisions.
Project Background
This section of SE Foster Road experiences a higher rate of road departure crashes thank other streets in Portland. The narrow shoulders, coupled with curves, has results in 4 lane departure crashes (1 fatal) and 21 road departure crashes in the last five years.
Project Goals
Prevent lane departure crashes and sideswipe crashes on SE Foster Road
Project Impacts
SE Foster Road One Day Closure & Detour
- SE Foster Road closure for one day during centerline work. Closure will only be between the hours 9am-3pm. Residents who live along SE Martins Street will be accommodated.
- Shrubs in the right-of-way along the shoulder may need to be pruned.
