PBOT wraps up work on NE Weidler Street
Thank you for your patience! Come out to support businesses on NE Broadway Saturday, October 4
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) wrapped up work on NE Broadway and NE Weidler Street last week, completing a months-long maintenance and safety effort.
As part of scheduled maintenance paving projects, PBOT changed the layout of portions of both streets to provide safer, more vibrant, and more welcoming streetscapes. These improvements were focused on NE Broadway between NE 7th and 26th avenues and on NE Weidler Street between NE 15th and 24th avenues, including the NE 24th Avenue curves from NE Weidler Street to NE Broadway.

August 1, 2025 Update
PBOT crews completed paving on NE Weidler and are largely complete with striping, signing. In addition to the planned work, PBOT made improvements to the signal at Broadway and 24th Avenue after reports of traffic congestion. Thank you for your patience as we fixed this issue.
In the coming weeks, traffic separators will be installed near 24th Avenue and finishing touches will be completed.
TriMet will also be making stop changes, including new amenities, new stop locations, and stop closures. For questions about TriMet stop changes, email SolisC@TriMet.org.
July 21, 2025 Update
PBOT crews completed paving NE Weidler between 15th and 24th avenues. In the coming weeks, PBOT crews will complete the new striping design and construct additional safety improvements. Construction is anticipated to be complete by fall 2025.
June 23, 2025 Update
Beginning on Monday, July 7, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will begin repaving NE Weidler between 15th and 24th avenues. PBOT crews will remove damaged asphalt and replace with new asphalt. Following paving, PBOT crews will implement a new striping design and construct additional safety improvements. Construction is anticipated to be complete by fall 2025.
NE Weidler Street
Monday, July 7 – Wednesday, July 16
- First: NE Weidler from the west side of 15th to west side of 21st Avenue (working west to east)
- Second: NE Weidler from the west side of 21st to west side of 24th avenues (working west to east)
Paving work is weather-dependent, so keep in mind these dates are subject to change.
Immediately following paving, PBOT crews will stripe the travel lane lines. Within a week after paving, additional pavement markings such as crosswalks, bike lane symbols, green cross bikes, and parking lane lines will be installed.
In August, PBOT will make additional safety improvements to NE Weidler, including traffic separators at the 24th Avenue curve to enhance visibility and awareness of people bicycling along the street. This work is expected to take about a month, extending active construction on the corridor to the end of August.
Paving construction impacts
During repaving, one travel lane will be open in the work zone. Expect rough roads, and traffic delays with detours of side streets set up, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with some weekend work. This may limit access at times. Parking will be restricted 1-2 days before crews begin and throughout the repairs. Pedestrian access will remain open.
Expect dust, noise, vibrations, and heavy equipment on NE Weidler and side streets. As always, please keep our crews safe by following all traffic control signs and flaggers while traveling through or near work zones. We encourage public transit riders to check TriMet.org for service impacts.

June 1, 2025 Update
The project team spent early 2025 conducting public outreach with neighbors, community members, and business owners on the project design. The design of the safety improvements has been updated in response to community requests to move the merge area one block to the west to provide more time and space for the merging to occur and to allow for the crossing at NE 22nd Avenue to only cross a single travel lane, further improving safety in this area. This change will also enable a TriMet bus stop to be moved to a safer location, and will provide more on-street parking on the residential, narrow blocks of NE Weidler Street.
Construction of corner ramps on NE Weidler Street is nearly complete, and repaving is scheduled for July 2025. Additional pre-paving construction activities may take place throughout the project limits, and re-striping and other safety elements will be installed after the paving work.

Project overview
NE Weidler Street will be getting fresh pavement, accessible curb ramps, and safety improvements in summer to fall of 2025. A scheduled maintenance repaving project from NE 15th Avenue to NE 24th Avenue is an opportunity to address safety issues in a timely and cost-effective way while also addressing other long-standing community needs. The sharp curve at the end of NE Weidler Street onto NE 24th Avenue has been a persistent safety concern with dozens of reported roadway departure crashes over many years. On Christmas Eve of 2024, a driver crashed their car into the house at the end of NE Weidler Street at 24th Avenue and ignited a gas line, triggering an explosion and house fire. This incident highlighted the need for a safety intervention at this location, and PBOT has developed a set of low-cost safety improvements to address this issue in addition to other safety updates along NE Weidler Street along the length of the repaving project.
NE Weidler Street and 24th Avenue safety improvements
- Restripe NE Weidler Street to introduce a "zipper merge" from two lanes to one lane eastbound between 21st Avenue and 22nd Avenue, continuing the single lane (plus added through/left lane as there is today) through the 24th Avenue curves, then adding back the second eastbound travel lane on Broadway just east of 24th Avenue.
- PBOT has conducted traffic analysis for this change and expect no significant impacts to travel times or to adjacent local streets due to the short section of lane reduction, the efficiency of a zipper merge, the distance between traffic signals, the efficient signal phasing at NE Broadway and 24th Avenue, and the lack of convenient cut-through routes on adjacent local streets.
- Lower the posted speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph, and retain the existing speed reader board and 15 mph advisory speed limit sign in advance of the NE 24th Avenue curve.
- Widen and buffer the bike lane and upgrade it with green striping and traffic separators at the 24th Avenue curve to enhance visibility and awareness of people bicycling along the street.
- Add sharrows to the local street portion of NE Weidler Street from 24th Avenue to 26th Avenue to assist in bicycle wayfinding through the area.
- Mark pedestrian crosswalks with stop bars and warning signage crossing NE Weidler Street at 22nd Avenue and 24th Avenue to enhance visibility and awareness of people crossing the street.
- Add on-street parking in some locations along NE Weidler Street, 24th Avenue, and Broadway, which will have the effect of narrowing the roadway when vehicles are parked, helping to slow down traffic as well as buffering pedestrians and outdoor dining areas from moving vehicles.
- Installing boulders and reflective signage to the sidewalk planting strip at the end of NE Weidler Street at 24th Avenue in front of the house that has been crashed into repeatedly, providing an extra layer of protection in case of reckless driving behavior.
Other NE Weidler Street improvements
In summer 2025, NE Weidler Street will be repaved from 15th Avenue to 24th Avenue as part of PBOT's regular pavement maintenance program. In addition to repaving work, this segment will receive several other updates:
- Accessible curb ramps at intersections along the corridor (most have been completed)
- A wider, buffered bike lane, with space gained by narrowing the travel lanes slightly to meet current guidelines
- Marked crosswalks, "do not pass" striping (on multi-lane approaches), stop bars, and warning signage at unsignalized intersections (17th Avenue, 19th Avenue, 22nd Avenue, and 24th Avenue)
- Lower posted speed limit of 25 mph, down from 30 mph today
NE Broadway Pave and Paint
The Broadway Pave and Paint Project nearby is also adding a variety of safety updates including new crossings, bus stop improvements, and better bike lanes.
Project goals
- A Safer Street with Slower Speeds: We want NE Weidler Street to be a safer street with fewer crashes, safer speeds, and a more welcoming environment for everybody.
- Improve Access for People Walking & Biking: Whether you’re trying to cross the street, catch the bus, or get where you’re going on a bike, NE Weidler Street can be a stressful and unwelcoming environment. We want to fix that.
- Develop a high-quality project with broad community support that responds to community needs and takes advantage of a safety and paving opportunity.
