Transportation
Under Construction
PBOT will install nine safer crossings on NE Killingsworth including pedestrian islands and curb extensions. Crossings at NE 7th Avenue, NE 22nd Avenue and NE 25th Avenue will be constructed in December 2024 through January 2025. The remaining crossings will be constructed in summer 2025.

Project Schedule

Construction is beginning for crossings on NE Killingsworth Street at 7th, 22nd, 25th in December of 2024. These crossings are scheduled to be complete in January of 2025. This work is weather dependent and schedules may need to be updated.  Crossings at 11th, 13th, 17th, 27th 35th and Cesar Chavez will be constructed in the summer of 2025.

Project Updates

After community outreach and discussions with Vernon Elementary School, the crossing at NE 22nd Avenue will be upgraded to include a median island. The crossing will be constructed between December 23rd and January 3rd to coincide with the Portland Public School winter break.

Construction of the crossing at NE 27th Avenue has been postponed until the summer of 2025. There is currently a TriMet bus route that runs north/south on NE 27th Avenue which will be moving to NE 33rd Avenue in early summer 2025. PBOT will be  modifying the design of the new crossing in anticipation of this route change.

Project Scope & Background

This project will improve safety on NE Killingsworth Street between NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and NE 42nd Avenue by adding nine pedestrian crossings. Pedestrian Islands will be added at NE 7th, 11th, 13th, 35th Place and Cesar Chavez. Curb extensions will be added at NE 17th Avenue, and the current paint and post crossing at NE 22nd Avenue will be upgraded to cement floating islands. The spacing of these crossings will bring the corridor up to PedPDX spacing guidelines, improve pedestrian safety, and provide a traffic calming effect. The new crossings will require parking removal to accommodate sight lines and the new islands and curb extensions.

The project is funded through the State Funded Local Projects program administered by the Oregon Department of Transportation, PCEF, and HB2017.
