November 2023 Update

Contractors with PBOT begin construction on a package of pedestrian crossing improvements and street lighting improvements this month. Work on the new crossings will begin first, and construction on street lighting improvements will start in 2024.

August 15, 2023

This project team is preparing for construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2023 and take approximately 12 months to complete.

Project Overview

This PBOT project prioritizes investments for critical safety and maintenance improvements along NE Halsey Street from NE 112th to 162nd avenues.

Project Background

Portland’s High Crash Network makes up 8% of Portland’s streets and is where 57% of serious injuries crashes and fatalities occur. Using a data-driven Vision Zero approach, PBOT has identified street lighting as a critical improvement to make these streets safer. Recent analysis indicates a number of our High Crash Network streets in some of our most diverse neighborhoods lack adequate street lighting. In addition, public engagement work by PBOT has found that people of color feel less safe walking on poorly lit streets.

The project addresses deficiencies in illumination along NE Halsey Ave by filling the lighting gaps between NE 112th and NE 162nd Streets.
