What’s happening now?
This project is currently putting the finishing touches on design and soon heading to procurement. We expect to begin construction in winter 2022.
Project Background
Portland’s High Crash Network makes up 8% of Portland’s streets and is where 57% of serious injuries crashes and fatalities occur. Using a data-driven Vision Zero approach, PBOT has identified street lighting as a critical improvement to make these streets safer. Recent analysis indicates a number of our High Crash Network streets in some of our most diverse neighborhoods lack adequate street lighting. In addition, public engagement work by PBOT has found that people of color feel less safe walking on poorly lit streets.
This project will add streetlights on both sides of NE Glisan Street from NE 82nd to NE 162nd avenues.
In addition, the project will construct five traffic signals identified as crossing priorities during PBOT's Safe Routes to School Outreach effort in 2017. The signals will be constructed at the following intersections:
- NE MLK Blvd & NE Going St
- E Burnside St & SE 16th Ave
- SE Washington St & SE 86th Ave
- SE 148th Ave & SE Main St
- NE Glisan St & NE 113th Ave
Project Funding
The project is a bundle of six capital projects, all with their own construction funding streams coming from a variety of sources including Fixing Our Streets, Cannabis Tax, and System Development Charges.
