Currently  under construction:

  • 15th and Broadway SE, SW Corners - 2 weeks to complete
  • 16th and Broadway NE, NW Corners and transit platform - 3 weeks to complete
  • 21st and Broadway SE, SW Corners - 1 week to complete
  • 21st and Broadway NW, NE Corners and transit platform - 2 weeks to complete
  • 21st and Broadway - SE, SW Corners - 3 weeks to complete

Use caution to keep crews safe when traveling near work zones.

We ask the public to travel slowly and cautiously in work zones, observe all detours and directions by reader boards and flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible. As always, please keep crews safe by following all traffic control signs and flaggers while traveling through or near work zones. Parking near work zones may be restricted during construction.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

Project overview

Through a bundle of lower cost improvements, this design from NE 7th Ave to NE 26th Ave provides more space to people walking and biking while also lowering speed and supporting adjacent businesses. In order to make space for these improvements, we recommend reducing the number of travel lanes from three to two. Our technical analysis showed the street is overbuilt for automobiles even at the busiest time of day.

Full Project Benefits:

  • Five new pedestrian crossings on NE Broadway
  • Two bus stop improvements
  • Reduced speed limit to 20mph with updated signal timing
  • A better managed on-street parking strategy
  • A wide buffered bike lane with concrete protection at intersections
  • A new protected bike lane connection to the 20’s Bikeway.

Project Elements that Changed Since Winter Online Open House:

  • Refined and updated bus stop locations
  • Refined bike lane design to be compatible with potential future changes
  • Reduced speed limit from 25mph to 20mph through business district
  • Angled-in parking between NE 17th to NE 24th is now front-in, rather than back-in
  • New crosswalks on NE Weidler St will be included in separate paving project (see more information below)

Project goals

  • Support a Vibrant Main Street: The small business community on Broadway is home to many beloved businesses. We want to make the streetscape work better for them.
  • A Safer Street with Slower Speeds: We want NE Broadway to be a safer street with fewer crashes, safer speeds, and a more welcoming environment for everybody.
  • Improve Access for People Walking & Biking: Whether you’re trying to cross the street, catch the bus, or get where you’re going on a bike, Broadway can be a stressful and unwelcoming environment. We want to fix that.
  • Develop a high-quality project with broad community support that supports adopted policies, meets city standards, and is delivered on-time and on-budget.
