PBOT wraps up projects on NE Broadway and Weidler Street
Thank you for your patience! Come out to support businesses on NE Broadway Saturday, October 4
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) wrapped up work on NE Broadway and NE Weidler Street last week, completing a months-long maintenance and safety effort.
As part of scheduled maintenance paving projects, PBOT changed the layout of portions of both streets to provide safer, more vibrant, and more welcoming streetscapes. These improvements were focused on NE Broadway between NE 7th and 26th avenues and on NE Weidler Street between NE 15th and 24th avenues, including the NE 24th Avenue curves from NE Weidler Street to NE Broadway.
Improvements included:
- 4.2 miles of paving and 6.4 miles of lane markings
- 76 curb ramps and 47 pedestrian push buttons
- Five new pedestrian crossings with refuge islands on NE Broadway
- Four new pedestrian crossings on NE Weidler Street
- Wider, buffered bike lanes on both NE Broadway and NE Weidler Street, with concrete protection at key intersections
- Improved bus stops for TriMet Line 17 and Line 77
- Adjustments to the curb zone to optimize on-street parking
- Reduction in travel lanes on NE Broadway from three lanes to two lanes west of NE 24th Avenue
- Reduction in travel lanes on NE Weidler Street from two lanes to one lane approaching and through the NE 24th Avenue curves
- Lower speed limits to 20 mph within business districts and 25 mph outside business districts on both streets, plus signal timing adjustments
- In progress: five new streetlights will be installed at new marked crossings this fall
Tips for driving the new NE Broadway
Drivers: Stay to the left of the bike lane and the concrete islands before making a right turn from NE Broadway to a side street. The bike lane is for bicycling (and scooting, skateboarding, etc.) and should not be used by drivers for turning right. The new concrete island design is there to separate and protect people riding bicycles from turning vehicles.

Project overview
Through a bundle of lower-cost improvements, this design from NE 7th Ave to NE 26th Ave provides more space to people walking and biking while also lowering speed and supporting adjacent businesses. In order to make space for these improvements, we recommend reducing the number of travel lanes from three to two. Our technical analysis showed the street is overbuilt for automobiles even at the busiest time of day.
Full Project Benefits:
- Five new pedestrian crossings on NE Broadway
- Two bus stop improvements
- Reduced speed limit to 20mph with updated signal timing
- A better managed on-street parking strategy
- A wide buffered bike lane with concrete protection at intersections
- A new protected bike lane connection to the 20’s Bikeway.
Project Elements that Changed Since Winter Online Open House:

Project goals
- Support a Vibrant Main Street: The small business community on Broadway is home to many beloved businesses. We want to make the streetscape work better for them.
- A Safer Street with Slower Speeds: We want NE Broadway to be a safer street with fewer crashes, safer speeds, and a more welcoming environment for everybody.
- Improve Access for People Walking & Biking: Whether you’re trying to cross the street, catch the bus, or get where you’re going on a bike, Broadway can be a stressful and unwelcoming environment. We want to fix that.
- Develop a high-quality project with broad community support that supports adopted policies, meets city standards, and is delivered on-time and on-budget.
