Transportation
In Planning

Construction 2026-2027

What's happening now?

April 2025 Update

The project team has identified and prioritized segments within the project area for sidewalk widening and street tree planting. The team is kicking off property owner and tenant outreach and coordinating closely with the 82nd Avenue Transit Project.

The constraints map shows the potential challenges that the project team must consider when selecting areas for adding wider sidewalks and large street trees. The west side of SE 82nd Avenue between SE Duke and Malden streets shows the fewest constraints.

The sidwalk infill map shows where the project team has identified preferred sidewalk infill segments for this project. The team will begin reaching out to individual property owners and tenants. The final locations won't be finalized until late 2025.

Project overview

As part of this project, PBOT will fill in sidewalk gaps and widen existing sidewalks on 82nd Avenue in select locations between SE Foster Road and SE Clatsop Street.

As part of the new sidewalk, PBOT will plant trees in the furnishing zone, between where pedestrians walk and roll and moving vehicles in the road.

PBOT will deliver this project in partnership with the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) and Urban Forestry. In consultation with Urban Forestry, the project will prioritize planting large tree species to maximize shade potential.

Public involvement

PBOT faces a tight timeline to deliver critical fixes on 82nd Avenue.

To meet construction deadlines, PBOT will rely on insights from the extensive community engagement the bureau and other agencies conducted over the past 10 years, including:

The City conducted interviews with property owners, business owners, and community members, as well as market research to better understand barriers to redevelopment.

About Building a Better 82nd

A critical north-south connection and one of Portland’s high-crash corridors, 82nd Avenue is in urgent need of significant investment to improve safety and address maintenance issues. As of June 2022, the state transferred ownership of 82nd Avenue to the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT).
