July 31, 2024 Update

Multiple locations are under construction.

  • NE 82nd and Burnside - currently scheduled to be ready for testing in September and issuing of citations in October.
  • NE 82nd and Glisan - installation is wrapping up and a 30-day warning period is anticipated to begin mid-August. Citations will be issued after that 30-day period.

This timeline may shift, as we continue to see vandalism and other issues impacting our timelines for delivering these crucial safety improvements.

Project overview

As part of this project, PBOT will make critical safety improvements to 82nd Avenue, including installing new fixed speed and intersection cameras.

Intersection safety cameras are new to Portland and issue citations for speeding and red light running.

Locations

Each camera enforces speed and red lights for one direction of travel. See a list of all camera locations in Portland here

New fixed speed camera locations:

  • NE 82nd Avenue between NE Siskiyou and Klickitat streets (Northbound)
    • Status: Under Construction
  • NE 82nd Avenue between NE Fremont and Klickitat streets (Southbound)
    • Status: Under Construction

New intersection (speed and red light) camera locations:

  • SE 82nd Avenue at SE Woodstock Boulevard
    • Status: Actively issuing citations
  • E Burnside and SE 82nd Avenue - southbound
    • Status: Under construction
  • NE Glisan Street and 82nd Avenue - northbound
    • Status: Under construction
  • NE Glisan Street and 82nd Avenue - westbound
    • Status: Under construction

How were locations selected?

PBOT considered several factors when determining where to install fixed speed and intersection cameras along 82nd Avenue, including:

  • Serious injury and fatal crash data
  • Red light running violations and speed data
  • Installation feasibility, which includes lines of sight, utility conflicts, and road grades

These locations also are avoiding conflicts with planned signal improvements, which would require removal or relocation of camera equipment.

About Building a Better 82nd

A critical north-south connection and one of Portland’s high-crash corridors, 82nd Avenue is in urgent need of significant investments to improve safety and address maintenance issues. As of June 2022, ownership of 82nd Avenue transferred from the state to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

Critical Fixes Now

PBOT is investing $80 million in 82nd Avenue to deliver critical fixes now. The needed basic safety and maintenance repairs to the corridor include paving, crossings, lighting, safety improvements at intersections, and sidewalk improvements.

Future Investments Next

After making the most critical repairs, PBOT will invest $105 million in future investments for a better 82nd Avenue. Over the next two years, PBOT will conduct broad and inclusive community engagement and work directly with community-based organizations and agency partners to determine what the bureau should focus on for improving 82nd Avenue long-term.
