What's happening now?
March 2026
Starting Wednesday, March 11, crews with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will upgrade NW/SW Broadway by installing planters and concrete traffic separators in the bike lane buffer. The improvements will reduce ongoing maintenance and improve aesthetics on the highly visible downtown corridor.
PBOT crews will begin their work on SW Broadway between SW Oak and SW Yamhill. This initial phase of work is expected to be complete by mid-May, in time for the 2026 Bloom Tour.
Later this year, crews will extend the improvements between NW Glisan and W Burnside streets and SW Broadway between SW Yamhill and Clay streets.
Construction impacts
Installation of bike lane improvements will require daytime parking restrictions, starting Wednesday, March 11.
People driving on SW Broadway are urged to go slow and use extreme caution, as some people on bikes may choose to share the travel lanes in the area.
Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on select business days and possibly weekends. The bike lane will remain open during construction, but people biking may want to use alternate routes.
The traveling public is advised to expect delays, travel cautiously, observe all closures and use alternate routes if possible. Local access to residences and businesses will remain available. Sidewalks will remain open at all times for pedestrians.
January 2026
The project team has incorporated public feedback received since November into an updated concept design. The team will continue public outreach and finalize designs in February.
November 2025
The project team has completed an initial concept design and is beginning public outreach about the project.
Project overview
This project implements public feedback we've received since the initial installation of the NW/SW Broadway Bike Improvements projects. As a part of this project, PBOT will improve safety and aesthetics along the corridor from NW Glisan to SW Clay. In addition, we will continue to support parking and loading activity.
Project goals include:
- Improve aesthetics
- Continue to advance safety improvements identified by the Central City in Motion (CCIM) Plan
- Reduce the maintenance burden on the City

Project benefits
This project will continue to improve safety and aesthetics on NW/SW Broadway.
- PBOT will upgrade the existing plastic delineator posts with rectangular planters in the bike lane buffer. This will add greenery along the corridor while improving safety.
- Concrete traffic separators will be installed along the edge of each planter, to reduce the maintenance burden on the City. The separators will lessen the likelihood that planters will get moved by vehicles and become obstructions in the bike lane.
- Parking signs will be consolidated and relocated from plastic posts to the sidewalk and concrete islands, reducing visual clutter.
An updated draft concept will be available soon.
Project impacts
This project involves some adjustments to on-street parking and loading zones. As a part of this project, parking on NW Broadway on the west side of the street will be updated to be available all hours of the day. This removes the current "No Parking" restriction from 6 to 9 a.m. During these morning peak commute hours, vehicle travel times may be slightly longer than they were previously.
