Project overview

This project is complete. In fall 2020 PBOT improved safety for bicyclists and pedestrians along NW/SW Broadway, and improved speed and reliability for people riding transit on NW 5th and 6th avenues.

PBOT installed high-visibility crosswalks at eight intersections throughout the corridor.

Bike lanes and pedestrian crossings were upgraded on this high-crash corridor from NW Irving to SW Oak streets, and signal equipment and signal software were improved on NW 5th and 6th avenues from NW Irving Street to W Burnside. High-visibility crosswalks installed at eight intersections, and a paint-and-post traffic circle was installed at SW Broadway and Pine to improve safety for all users. 

Between NW Couch and Burnside, PBOT installed a temporary curb extension (a Zicla platform) in partnership with Central City Concern (CCC). The platform maintains a curb-tight bike lane while supporting curb-height passenger loading and unloading for CCC’s clients, many of whom are older adults and people with disabilities.  

As part of the project, TriMet rerouted their Line 17 from NW Broadway to the Transit Mall on 5th and 6th avenues, reducing bus-bike conflicts and improving transit speed and reliability. On the Transit Mall, 19 new controllers were installed, which gives busses a green light more quickly when following a MAX train. It is the largest simultaneous deployment of new controllers on MAX intersections! 

Separate from this project, PBOT is installing a new traffic signal at NW Flanders Street and NW Broadway Street as part of the Flanders Crossing I-405 Bike & Pedestrian Bridge project. This work is anticipated to be complete in Spring 2021. In 2022, PBOT will rebuild the existing traffic signal at NW Broadway Street and NW Glisan Street to improve safety.

How does parking work?  

Parking is available on the west side of the street between the bike lane and the travel lane. A similar design was first implemented on SW Broadway next to the Portland State University campus in 2009. PBOT has also installed parking protected bike lanes on SW Capitol Highway and N Rosa Parks Way.

When parking, park parallel to the white posts in marked spaces. Follow all posted parking restrictions. 

On the west side of NW Broadway, parking and loading zones are available all hours of the day, except 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday to Friday. From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. the street accommodates a second travel lane for southbound traffic.
