This map shows the area of SE Division where crews will remove pavement that is wavy, cracked and uneven, replacing it with new, smooth asphalt to prevent potholes. Businesses will remain open during construction and PBOT encourages everyone to support them. Map by PBOT.

(July 22, 2026) -- The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) advises the traveling public that SE Division Street between SE Cesar Chavez Blvd and SE 50th Avenue will have closures for repairs and repaving beginning July 28 through Sept. 10. The work zone will change from week to week, mostly with lane closures restricting travel in one direction at a time, but also with periods of full closures, when travelers will need to use alternate routes.

A PBOT contractor will repave about a half mile of the busy corridor, including a complete reconstruction of the intersection of SE Division and 50th Avenue, where crews will remove historic trolley tracks that have been undermining the pavement. Some sections will require closures of a single day, and others will require multiple days, as some areas require only a few inches of repaving and others as deep as 7 inches.

SE Division Street Repaving Project will replace pavement that is wavy, cracked and uneven with new, smooth asphalt that should prevent potholes for years to come.

Businesses will remain open during the project. Nearly all the corridor will have sidewalks open and accessible, except for times when the corner at SE 50th will be rebuilt.

Prosper Portland, the City's Office of Small Business and the Division Clinton Business District are working with PBOT on social media and event promotion to support businesses during construction.

In anticipation of the paving project, some corners were rebuilt last year to include ADA ramps that meet modern standards.

Over the coming weeks, crews will move along the corridor and construct 1-to-3 block sections at a time, to reduce traffic impacts as much as possible. The work will start with replacing a corner ramp at Division at SE 50th on Tuesday July 28, and traffic delays can be expected for one week. This work will require crosswalk closures while the ramp is being rebuilt.

Full road closures coming soon on SE Division and later on SE 50th Avenue

A full closure of SE Division Street, 24-hours a day, will be required during the weekend of Aug. 1 to 3, from SE Cesar E Chavez Blvd to SE 41st Avenue. Then, a full closure of SE Division from SE 48th to 50th on Aug. 3.

From Aug. 4 to 13, crews will repave the street, between SE 41st and 48th avenues, starting with the north side and then the south side. That work will allow one lane open, one direction, at all times.

Parking will be restricted in areas while they are under construction, and access to side streets and crosswalks will be temporarily closed.

Beginning in late August, crews will reconstruct the intersection at SE Division Street and SE 50th Avenue. Construction will require periods of both partial and full closures -- of both SE Division Street and SE 50th Avenue. Reconstruction of the intersection will last approximately 2 to 3 weeks.

SE 50th Avenue will be fully closed, 24-hours a day, for several days starting Aug. 17 during work on the north side of SE Division in the intersection. Travelers on that street are asked to use SE Cesar E Chavez Blvd as an alternate route.

After repaving, crews will move back through the corridor to install signing and striping.

Travelers are advised to expect delays. Obey road closure barricades and follow directions from traffic signs and flaggers.

Regional travelers passing through the area should use SE Powell Blvd or SE Hawthorne as alternate routes.

The work zone has been designed to limit the impact on the busy FX-2 Division bus route and others in the area, but there will be some delays or changes to bus stops. For details on bus service, checktrimet.org

Please continue to support local businesses during construction.

This project is made possible by $4.7 million from the City of Portland General Fund.
