(May 28, 2026) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) advises the traveling public that construction on SW Alder Street is continuing as crews make progress upgrading two key transit stops in downtown Portland.
At SW Alder Street and 6th Avenue, utility relocations are mostly complete, clearing the way for PBOT's contractor to build the foundations that will support the new bus shelter. At 10th Avenue, our contractor has finished the bus shelter foundations and is installing underground conduit and electrical equipment.
The project will provide aesthetic upgrades, weather protection, and better lighting at both stops. The improvements near 6th Avenue lay the groundwork for the James Beard Public Market, one of Portland's most anticipated new destinations.
Construction began in April and is on track for completion by the middle of August.
During construction, Portlanders can expect daytime noise and travel delays on SW Alder Street through downtown, particularly during the morning and evening commute. SW Alder Street will remain open with a single travel lane. Transit riders should check www.trimet.org for impacts.
Pedestrians are detoured to avoid the south side of SW Alder Street between 11th and 10th avenues. Parking is restricted on both sides of SW Alder Street approaching 6th and 10th avenues.
SW Alder Street will be fully reopened for the Portland Rose Festival from June 3 through 7. Single lane closures on SW Alder Street will resume June 8.
Open for Business During Construction: Spella Caffè
Step into Spella Caffè at 608 SW Alder Street, where downtown Portland fades into the warm hum of a classic Italian espresso bar. Tucked inside the historic Selling Building near Pioneer Square, this intimate, standing-room-only sanctuary brings old-world ritual right to the heart of the Rose City.
Also open during construction are Rocket Fizz and Spa Sassé on SW Alder Street between 6th Avenue and Broadway, and Jake's Grill, Domaine Serene Wine Lounge, and Halo Shoes between 11th and 10th avenues.
