(Aug. 20, 2025) After months of work, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has reopened SW Tichner Drive near the intersection of West Burnside as of Wednesday afternoon, August 20, to all traffic following a landslide and its subsequent cleanup.
On Saturday, March 29, hundreds of cubic yards of rocky material broke free from a steep, 100-foot-tall rock face. The dislodged rock mass landed primarily in a PBOT sand storage lot below, but some rocks the size of bowling balls spilled onto SW Tichner Drive requiring a closer of the road to motor vehicle traffic for safety.
Along with the specialized work requiring climbing ropes and precision tools, clearing rocks and debris that fell during the slide and response work required 32 truckloads. Approximately 3,406 tons of material were removed.
Additional work and monitoring planned; no road closures required
During removal of rocks and debris from the site, crews discovered a section of catchment wall at the base of the rockface had been damaged by the fallen material. PBOT is working to acquire a contractor to reconstruct the wall. Once a contract is in place, crews will reconstruct the wall using the sandlot area below the slide. Limited traffic impacts are expected.
PBOT will continue to monitor the landslide site throughout the winter and rainy season to assess any issues.
Road closures and detours can be challenging, especially for an extended period of time. PBOT greatly appreciates the patience from the Arlington Heights community, Explore Washington Park, Portland Parks & Recreation, the Portland Water Bureau, and other Washington Park sites like the Portland Japanese Garden.
