Debris removal phase begins in multi-step landslide response process

(7/29/25) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), in partnership with contractors Access Limited Construction and Titan Utilities, LLC, has made significant progress in the rockfall mitigation response at the SW Tichner Drive landslide site.

This morning, Titan Utilities began hauling away thousands of cubic yards of debris from the bottom of the cliff face. This work is expected to take up to a week and may cause traffic disruptions as trucks enter and exit the site.

The current phase of work involves hauling fallen material from the site. This follows earlier efforts by Access Limited Construction who removed unstable rocks from the slope face. Throughout much of July, specialized crew members rappelled from the top of the slope and used hand tools like pry bars and airbags inflated with compressed air to safely dislodge loose rocks and debris.

The project's third phase - installing a draped cable mesh system to mitigate future rockfall - will begin once the base of the site has been cleared for a crane.

SW Tichner Drive will remain closed to motor vehicles until all project work has been completed and the area is deemed safe for vehicle travel. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic has been maintained on the northern Tichner sidewalk throughout construction.

A contractor will use excavators and trucks to haul the massive pile of debris from the base of the site. Clearing the area will create space for a crane to install the draped cable mesh that will mitigate future rockfall. Photo by PBOT.
