(July 2, 2025) It’s officially summer and the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) invites Portlanders to join an amazing line up of free bike maintenance workshops, group rides, and more! Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve hopped on a bike, or you want to explore your neighborhood by bike. Or maybe you’re completely new to biking and looking for a place to start.

Look no further than the many FREE events we’re offering through our Portland By Cycle program in the coming months.

Bike maintenance workshops

In these workshops participants will learn how to make quick fixes to their bikes and maintain it for safe and smooth riding all year round. These workshops feature a flat tire fixing demonstration and an opportunity to get hands-on practice. Bring your bike (or just yourself!) and your questions. Our knowledgeable staff will help guide you to a solution.

Find us at three upcoming workshops:

Neighborhood Bike Fairs

Calling all kids and adults who want to learn how to ride a bike! PBOT’s Neighborhood Bike Fairs are a one stop shop to get comfortable on a bike. In partnership with the Community Cycling Center, PBOT staff set up various stations for bike safety lessons, learn-to-ride coaching for all ages, quick-fix bike repairs, helmet fittings, and a short, guided ride to test out all of these skills!

Bring your own bike or borrow one of ours. We’ll provide bikes in various sizes for the learn-to-ride clinic. This is a low-stress, no judgement environment to feel more confident and comfortable on a bike.

Join the next Bike Fair in East Portland:

Guided group rides

New to town, new to Portland, or just want to meet your neighbors on a bike ride? Explore a low-stress, guided bike ride on one of our “New to Portland” rides. These group rides are a moderate pace and no-drop (no one will be left behind).

Check out these upcoming rides in Northeast and North Portland:

You don’t have to take it from us that these are fun, inclusive rides! Here’s what a participant said who rode on the East Portland New to Portland Ride:

“It was such a fun ride. It was fun to see pockets I have never seen before in my own neighborhood.” - Nikki M.

Join the City Bike Bus!

Commute downtown with the City Bike Bus! A bike bus is a group of students—but in this case, adults—biking to school—but in this case, downtown—together. Kids are welcome to join the fun too! This is great practice for students who are planning to join their school bike bus in the fall.

Join us on one of nine unique bike bus routes on your ride to downtown. Rides start at various times and converge at Salmon Street Springs. This event happens every second Wednesday of the month from May through October 2025.

Other biking resources

Can’t make it to these events or want to start your bike-riding journey from the comfort of home? We have a series of recorded skill-building classes and bike tips on the Portland By Cycle website. Check out a quick tutorial on using PortlandBikeMap.com where you’ll learn the various features of our online bike map. Or scroll through more then thana dozen suggested bike rides around town. You can virtually ride through the HOP Neighborhood Greenway and the 130’s Neighborhood Greenway.

PBOT’s Portland by Cycle program has also developed a list of suggested rides around Portland, which are all loops and are centered around low-traffic streets and Neighborhood Greenways. From the “Summer of Pride 2023 – N/NE Loop” to the “Classic Waterfront Loop Ride”, there’s a ride in every part of the city.

We hope you'll join us in community this summer. Happy biking!
