This rendering of the intersection of NE Broadway at NE 22nd Avenue provides a sample of improvements that will be implemented across the corridor, including: a wider buffered bike lane with protected intersections, pedestrian refuges that shorten crossing distances, new pedestrian crossings with median islands, and slower speeds and right sized travel lanes. (June 24, 2025) Beginning on Monday, July 7, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will begin repaving a more than half-mile stretch of the NE Weidler and NE Broadway couplet, a major part of a long-awaited investment in maintenance and safety improvements in the heart of the NE Broadway business district. In recent months, crews have been building new ADA corner ramps in anticipation of the repaving work.
PBOT crews will remove damaged asphalt and replace with new asphalt. Following paving, PBOT crews will implement a new striping design and construct additional safety improvements. Construction is anticipated to be complete by fall 2025.

Tentative Paving Schedule (subject to change):
NE Weidler Street Monday, July 7 – Wednesday, July 16
- First: NE Weidler from the west side of 15th to west side of 21st Avenue (working west to east)
- Second: NE Weidler from the west side of 21st to west side of 24th avenues (working west to east)
NE Broadway Monday, July 21 through Monday, August 4
- First: NE Broadway from the east side of 22nd Avenue to east side of 15th Avenue (working east to west)
- Second: NE Broadway from the east side of 15th Avenue to west side of 11th Avenue (working east to west)
Paving work is weather-dependent, so keep in mind these dates are subject to change.
Immediately following paving, PBOT crews will stripe the travel lane lines. Within a week after paving, additional pavement markings such as crosswalks, bike lane symbols, green cross bikes, and parking lane lines will be installed.

Construction Impacts
During repaving, one travel lane will be open in the work zone. Expect rough roads, and traffic delays with detours of side streets set up, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, with some weekend work. This may limit access at times. Parking will be restricted 1-2 days before crews begin and throughout the repairs. Pedestrian access will remain open.
Expect dust, noise, vibrations, and heavy equipment on NE Broadway, NE Weidler and sidestreets. As always, please keep our crews safe by following all traffic control signs and flaggers while travelling through or near work zones. We encourage public transit riders to check TriMet.org for service impacts.

Project Background
Scheduled maintenance repaving projects like these ones provide PBOT an opportunity to consider changes to how space is laid out between the curbs to improve safety, access, and support vibrant main streets on NE Broadway and NE Weidler. With input from the community, we are using this much-needed maintenance opportunity to improve the future streetscape and put the street back better than the way it was before.

Between summer 2024 and early 2025, PBOT staff worked closely with key stakeholders and business owners along NE Broadway and Weidler to understand issues and opportunities to make the street safer and more welcoming.
Though numerous neighborhood meetings, workshops, a community survey and online open house, and many conversations with stakeholders and business owners on the corridor, PBOT was able to guide a facilitate a community engagement process that arrived at a corridor redesign that addresses long-standing needs around safety and access to support and vibrant and welcoming main street.
The Broadway Pave and Paint project in particular has strong support from a big tent of nearby stakeholders including Irvington Community Association and Sullivan’s Gulch Neighborhood Association, the NE Broadway Business Association, and transportation advocates with long-standing aspirations to improve the pedestrian, cycling, and overall streetscape environment on NE Broadway.

In order to make space for these improvements, PBOT will reduce the number of travel lanes on NE Broadway from three to two.

Weidler Project Benefits:
- Safety improvements approaching 24th Avenue and around the curves to Broadway, including reducing travel lanes from two lanes to one lane eastbound through this segment and adding on-street parking to reduce speeds and enhance safety for all travelers
- Four new pedestrian crossings at 17th Avenue, 19th Avenue, 22nd Avenue, and 24th Avenue—all the unsignalized intersections along the corridor
