(Oct. 13, 2025) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will upgrade the intersection of West Burnside Street and SW Fourth Avenue next week as part of the SW Fourth Avenue Improvement Project, including new traffic signal equipment and ADA-compliant curb ramps on the south side of the intersection.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the intersection of West Burnside Street and SW Fourth Avenue will be controlled by flaggers as crews perform preparatory work for the new traffic signals. People driving should expect delays on West Burnside Street in both directions with intermittent holds at SW Fourth Avenue.

From Wednesday, Oct. 15, through the end of the week, West Burnside Street will be reduced to one eastbound lane at SW Fourth Avenue while crews work along the south side of the intersection with delays expected near the work zone.

Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians. Transit riders should check trimet.org for any service updates. With the Broadway Bridge closure beginning Monday, Oct. 13, travelers should expect additional congestion on the Burnside Bridge and allow extra travel time. This work is weather dependent and the schedule may change.

The traveling public is advised to expect delays, travel cautiously, follow flaggers and posted signs, and use alternate routes when possible. Local access to residences and businesses will be maintained.

Looking Ahead

Work on SW Fourth Avenue continues to progress northward to West Burnside Street, with a focus on completing underground utility repairs prior to final paving.

The final segment of paving for the project (between SW Harvey Milk and West Burnside Street) is currently scheduled for the weekend of October 17. This schedule is weather dependent, as crews need dry conditions for final paving.

Crews will be working to install the remaining concrete traffic separators on the corridor between SW Salmon Street and West Burnside Street. Installation of permanent roadway striping will occur as weather allows.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience while we complete this work.
