The closure is for the safety of travelers during bridge repair work.

(Dec. 15, 2023) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) advises the traveling public that the multiuse path on the lower deck of the Steel Bridge, between Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Eastside Esplanade, will be closed from Dec. 18 to Dec. 22 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
The closure is for the safety of travelers during bridge repair work. Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will be conducting repairs from a barge and using a lift to access the bridge.
Pedestrians and people biking will have access to the upper deck of the bridge for crossing the Willamette River or may use other bridges as alternate routes.
