(April 26, 2022) - Construction begins this week on the SW Alder Rose Lane project. PBOT and TriMet are partnering on this project, which will construct new bus stops and related transit priority improvements on SW Alder Street from W Burnside Street to SW 2nd Avenue. This project supports TriMet's Line 15 route change, which will move the eastbound bus from SW Salmon Street to SW Alder Street, reducing travel time and simplifying the route.

Construction will begin at Fireman’s Park at SW 18th Avenue and will last for about two months as crews work east. Buses will start serving the new stops along SW Alder Street on May 15, 2022.

The SW Alder Street Rose Lane project will install two new bus platforms so transit riders can access the new Line 15 route, which will run along SW Alder Street from W Burnside Street to SW 2nd Avenue before crossing the Morrison Bridge.

Bus riders on Line 15 may see up to two minutes of travel time savings with the route change and related transit priority improvements.

PBOT will add a bike lane on SW Alder Street between 4th and 2nd avenues allowing for safer connections to the multiuse path on the Morrison Bridge and linking to the 4th Avenue Improvement Project, slated to begin construction later this year. A protected bike lane on SW 2nd Avenue between SW Alder and Washington streets will also be installed, extending the existing protected bike lane along SW 2nd Avenue. The project will also upgrade crosswalks at signalized intersection to PBOT’s current high-visibility crosswalk standards. These changes will result in improved access to services and businesses along SW Alder Street and on 2nd Avenue between Alder and Washington streets.

The project will result in parking and loading zone changes along SW Alder on some blocks as well as SW 2nd Avenue.

Construction Impacts

Area residents and businesses should expect intermittent lane closures and traffic delays up to 20 minutes between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. Parking will be restricted one to two days before crews begin construction at specific locations.

Expect dust, noise, vibrations, and heavy equipment on SW Alder Street.  As always, please keep crews safe by following all traffic control signs and flaggers while travelling through or near work zones.

At least one lane of vehicle traffic will be maintained during construction. Pedestrian access will be maintained.

People riding transit should visit trimet.org/#alerts/ for the latest service impacts. People biking are advised to use SW Salmon Street as an alternate route.

The traveling public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel slowly and cautiously in work zones, observe all detours and directions by reader boards and flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

PBOT will provide periodic updates throughout construction. To sign up for construction updates, visit portland.gov/swalder
