(November 21, 2022) - Construction begins Wednesday, Nov. 30 on an additional improvement to the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s (PBOT) SW Broadway Bike Improvements project. This key Central City in Motion project provides a comfortable, safe southbound bicycle connection through the heart of downtown from the Broadway Bridge to I-405.

Contractors working for PBOT will install a curb extension at SW Broadway and Main to create a curb-height passenger loading zone to serve events and programming for Portland’5, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, and Antoinette Hatfield Hall.

People bicycling will ramp up to sidewalk level and ramp down to the street level at the curb extension. As is the case today, people bicycling should yield to pedestrians crossing the bike lane.

When complete, the curb extension will provide a safe place for passengers to load and unload, and people bicycling will continue to be separated from moving vehicles.

The SW Broadway Bicycle Improvements project brought a host of improvements to the popular downtown high-crash corridor, making it safer for all travelers. The bike lane on SW Broadway from SW Oak to Clay streets was upgraded and moved against the curb, completing the final segment in the southbound protected bike lane on Broadway from the Broadway Bridge to Portland State University.

This latest improvement to the project will not result in any additional parking or loading zone adjustments.

Construction Impacts

SW Broadway project will be in construction beginning Wednesday, Nov. 30. Construction is anticipated to last through December.

The traveling public is advised to expect delays while repairs are being made. We ask the public to travel slowly and cautiously in work zones, observe all detours and directions by reader boards and flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible.

While the public can expect dust, noise, vibrations, and heavy equipment near the work zone, PBOT’s team is in coordination with Portland’5 and construction noise will not interfere with scheduled performances.

As always, please keep crews safe by following all traffic control signs and flaggers while travelling through or near work zones.

Parking near the work zone will be restricted during construction. Vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.

PBOT will provide periodic updates throughout construction. To sign up for construction updates, visit portland.gov/swbroadway

Thank you for your cooperation and patience while we complete this work.
