Expect delays eastbound across the Hawthorne Bridge tomorrow as crews adjust new traffic signals

(Oct. 12, 2021) Beginning at 7 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 13, one of the two eastbound vehicular lanes on the Hawthorne Bridge will be closed to allow crews to adjust the recently installed traffic signals. Crews working for the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will adjust the louvers in the traffic signal heads to improve visibility of the signals. The work is scheduled to be complete tomorrow by 3:30 p.m. All eastbound lanes are expected to be reopened for the evening commute. The work is part of PBOT’s SW Naito Parkway Improvement Project, one component of a major transformation underway on SW Naito Parkway.

Crews will ensure at least one eastbound lane is open at all times, but people driving or taking transit across the bridge eastbound should expect delays. The northbound Naito to Hawthorne Bridge eastbound ramp will also be closed at times tomorrow, requiring people wishing to drive eastbound on the Hawthorne Bridge to detour turning left from Naito Parkway at SW Jefferson Street, right at SW 2^nd Avenue, and then right again onto SW Madison Street. The bridge will remain fully open to people walking and biking on both sides.

Construction on the SW Naito Parkway Improvement Project is scheduled to be substantially complete later this fall. PBOT greatly appreciates the patience and understanding of nearby residents and businesses. As the project moves towards completion, it will require future detours. The SW Naito Parkway Improvement Project is funded with $1.6M from Fixing Our Streets, with additional funding from Transportation System Development Charges and other sources. Fixing Our Streets funds are also leveraging additional Oregon Department of Transportation funding.
