(May 15, 2019) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is kicking off the design phase for a new project in the Rose City Park neighborhood. The NE 60th and Halsey Area Improvements Project will include improvements for people walking, biking and driving on NE Halsey Street between NE 47th and 60th Avenues and on NE 60th Avenue between the MAX station and NE Halsey Street. Halsey Street is part of the High Crash Network for people driving and walking.

As part of this project PBOT will:

  • Improve the flow of motor vehicle traffic on NE Halsey Street between NE 57th and 60th Avenues with new traffic signals and dedicated turn lanes. The NE 57th and Halsey signal was last rebuilt in 1972 (five years before the Trail Blazers won their first NBA playoff series) and the NE 60th Avenue signal was last rebuilt in 1985. The new signals will include modern communication technology that allow for traffic signal synchronization along the corridor.
  • Make the intersection of NE Halsey Street and NE 47th Avenue safer for people walking, biking and driving with a new traffic signal and dedicated turn lanes.
  • Widen the sidewalk on NE 60th Avenue between NE Halsey Street and the NE 60th Avenue MAX Station.
  • Construct bike improvements as part of the 60s Bikeway from SE Davis Street to NE Sacramento Street.

The project is currently in the early design phase and is scheduled to begin construction in the summer of 2020.
