(Sept. 20, 2018) Portland Sunday Parkways presented by Kaiser Permanente launches its last event of the year on Sept. 23 with an 8-mile Northeast Portland route. This traffic-free, family-friendly event takes people biking, rolling, walking or running on a tour of Woodlawn, Alberta, Fernhill, and Khunamokwst parks (pronounced KAHN-ah-mockst - click to hear the full pronunciation).
This popular route includes several neighborhood greenways, streets the Portland Bureau of Transportation has designed to prioritize bicycling, encourage walking and inspire people of all backgrounds to get out and get active every day. Sunday Parkways invites everyone to experience a collection of fun activities, festive music, and delicious food along with the popular Kaiser Permanente Sticker Hunt to benefit mental wellness organizations in our community.
“I am so pleased to become transportation commissioner in time to help celebrate the last of this year’s Sunday Parkways events,” said City Commissioner Chloe Eudaly, who became the commissioner overseeing PBOT, effective Sept. 4. “I encourage everyone to enjoy this chance to experience traffic-free streets, where you can walk, bike or roll to so many lovely Portland parks. With the start of school, Sunday Parkways is the perfect time for children and parents to practice biking and walking together. As the parent of a child with a disability, I look forward to the day when all Portlanders will have the ability to safely navigate our streets every day.”
Kaiser Permanente Sticker Hunt participants can complete the Sticker Hunt this Sunday by collecting the last of five, collectible neighborhood decals as a prize (Northeast Portland decal shown here). With each completed Sticker Hunt Map that is turned in to a Kaiser Permanente booth, a donation will be delivered to one of three mental health organizations (Trillium, Folk Time and NAMI Multnomah) to support keeping Oregon well.
In tune with Sunday Parkways’ reputation as a wonderful opportunity to ride bikes, Sunday Parkways is partnering with the African American Outdoor Association and the Community Cycling Center to lead a Sunday Parkways ride. Families, friends and the community are invited out to ride together. For those who do not have bikes, Community Cycling Center will provide loaner bikes and helmets for adult bicycle riders that can be used for free during the event.
In the full spirit of everything bike friendly and accessible, the Andando en Bicicletas en Cully (ABC) group, supported by the Community Cycling Center and Forth, will host a Bilingual Bike Fair at Sunday Parkways. The ABC group is comprised of Hacienda residents in the Cully neighborhood committed to providing and coordinating programs to promote bicycling. This amazing group will provide bike helmet safety and bike repair advice in both English and Spanish. The Bilingual Bike Fair can be found at Khunamokwst Park on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome!
The detailed Sunday Parkways route map shows the route as well as bus and light rail options to help area residents get to Sunday Parkways via bike and transit. A schedule and listing of event highlights are available on the Sunday Parkways Northeast Portland brochure.
