(May 11, 2016) – Outer Southeast Portland is the location for this year’s inaugural City of Portland Sunday Parkways presented by Kaiser Permanente which takes place this Sunday, May 15th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday Parkways is a series of five free community events opening the city's largest public space – its streets – for people to walk, bike, and roll. The events are hugely popular; total attendance topped 119,000 last year.
To make it easy for residents and visitors alike to join in the fun, PBOT has created a detailed Sunday Parkways route map with all area bikeway routes and bus and light rails routes to help everyone get to Sunday Parkways by biking and taking transit.
Joining East Portland Sunday Parkways this year is the New Portlanders Cultural Celebration & Family Day, hosted by Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), Parks for New Portlanders, and other valued partners. All are welcome to the free, multicultural community gathering to celebrate people new to Portland – and to the United States – and to introduce them to one of Portland’s most beloved traditions: Walking, biking and rolling through Portland’s neighborhoods in celebration of community.
“Through Sunday Parkways, we give every Portlander the opportunity to lead an active lifestyle and make use of the City’s largest public space, regardless of age, income, ability or neighborhood,” said Transportation Commissioner Steve Novick.
“Portland Sunday Parkways is the perfect way for people to combine fun and exercise,” said Rebecca Hoffman, M.D., a family practice physician at Kaiser Permanente. “Families can spend time together while being active and getting to know their neighbors better. We’re proud to be part of this quintessentially Portland event.”
“Like so many of my fellow Portlanders, I can’t wait for the first Sunday Parkways of the season,” said PBOT Director Leah Treat. “Opening Portland’s streets for a day of fun also opens up peoples’ minds to other ways we can use our public space to build community. We are proud to have new Portlanders joining us at Sunday Parkways, an event that is truly reflective of our values as a city.”
This route will highlight some of the beautiful natural areas that are located in East Portland, such as the Foster Floodplain Natural Area as well as Lents, Ed Benedict, Glenwood and Bloomington Parks plus Gilbert Heights Elementary School. Participants are encouraged to visit the BIKETOWN station at Lents Park where they will have an opportunity to check out the new bike share bikes and take a preview ride. In addition, each park will feature activities such as hula hooping, Zumba classes and a children’s circus as well as delicious food, music, and community businesses and organizations to connect with.
