(April 28, 2016) At least 125 children and adults had great fun at the annual Safe Routes to School Walk + Roll Fair (formerly the Spring Kick-Off). Families gathered at Kelly Elementary School in east Portland last Saturday to celebrate the return of spring, and healthy living through active transportation. Students learned about the importance of wearing helmets correctly (thanks Trauma Nurses Talk Tough), how to sign up for the Walk + Bike to School Challenge Month and Fire Up Your Feet Spring Challenge, and how to plan a bike route in their neighborhood. Multnomah County Library brought loads of books to give out to all participants.
Families were also able to get free basic bike repairs from Bike Gallery and Bike Farm. Andando en Bicicletas en Cully (ABC) taught students safe riding skills and how to fix a flat tire. And thanks to the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, a few students even learned how to ride a bike for the first time. A free lunch was served, and at the end of the day, families went on a neighborhood bike ride.A big thank you to Kelly School and PTA plus Playworks for helping us organize this event.
