(Aug. 19, 2015) – The City of Portland Sunday Parkways presented by Kaiser Permanente takes place in Southeast Portland this Sunday, Aug. 23, showing off seven miles of streets to traffic-free bicycling, walking, rolling and other fun activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Mayor Charlie Hales will join in the fun beginning at Portland Sunday Parkways’ new park – Sewallcrest Park at SE 31st Avenue and SE Stephens Street at 11 a.m.
“Portland Sunday Parkways gives every family a chance to experience our community’s creative place-making,” Mayor Hales said. “It shows off the best of what makes Portland a great city to live, travel and play.”
Though it is organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation, City bureaus will participate in this wildly popular event to say hello and provide information to residents and visitors alike. At the Mayor’s first stop in Sewallcrest Park, the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability will have its Climate Action station. Riding clockwise, the next stop will be Colonel Summers Park where the Portland Fire & Rescue trucks will be on hand for some CPR instruction and the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management will talk about preparedness. Continuing on to Laurelhurst Park, Portland Parks & Recreation climbing wall and slip and slide will be on hand. Last stop will be Ivon Park with the Portland Water Bureau water station. And of course, PBOT will be at all parks with walking and biking information.
Sunday Parkways is a series of five free community events opening Portland’s largest public space – its streets – for people to walk, bike, and roll and discover active transportation. The event series, held in a different neighborhood once a month from May to September, is hugely popular; total attendance topped 108,000 in 2014.
By holding traffic-free Sunday Parkways on routes that include neighborhood greenways and connect parks, PBOT hopes to encourage people of all backgrounds to get out and get active every day. Neighborhood greenway streets are designed with bike markings and low speed limits for everyone to bike, stroll, roll, skate and play on traffic-free streets. The Aug. 23 Sunday Parkways route connects four Southeast Portland Parks – Sewallcrest, Colonel Summers, Laurelhurst, and Ivon Parks.
The event’s detailed Sunday Parkways route map shows the route as well as bus and light rail options to help area residents get to Sunday Parkways via bike and public transit. A schedule and listing of event highlights are available on the Sunday Parkways Northeast Portland brochure.
