(Dec. 28, 2015) – The traveling public is advised to be alert for black ice on roadways this evening, especially in the West Hills. NW Germantown Road between Highway 30 and NW Skyline Boulevard, which was closed Sunday night because of downed trees and abandoned vehicles in the roadway, remains closed due to the continued risk of icy conditions. The roadway is expected to remain closed through Tuesday morning’s rush hour. Local access will be maintained for residents in the area. The public is encouraged to use alternate routes.
With temperatures expected to again drop to freezing this evening at high elevations in the Portland area, combined with already wet road surfaces, driving conditions can be hazardous.
Black ice is defined as ice that remains on roadways that are not subjected to direct sunlight. Black ice commonly forms on roads that wind around lakes and rivers, in tunnels, on overpasses and in highly shaded, rural areas. Black ice is almost invisible to the naked eye. Be especially careful when driving or riding into shaded areas, on bridges and overpasses, and on infrequently traveled roads. Slow down during your approach.
Anyone choosing to drive at high elevations in Portland during winter weather is encouraged to use caution, slow down, allow three times the normal distance to brake and stop safely, use headlights and share the road responsibly.
