Information
Schedule of basic road maintenance from the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). Includes gravel street service, grind-and-pave, base repair, crack sealing, micro-surfacing, and other work to preserve pavement conditions. Work typically takes less than a week, with minor traffic disruption.
Overview
Throughout the year, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) crews and contractors handle all types of basic road maintenance projects to preserve pavement conditions, so it lasts longer. These are projects bigger than a single pothole or utility cut, and not part of any capital improvement project.
Typical schedule
- January – April: Gravel Street service, some base repair
- April – September: Grind-and-pave work, base repair
- May – September: Sealing work such as micro-surfacing, slurry seal, crack seal etc.
- October – December: Gravel Street service, base repairs
Timing
Much of this work is weather-dependent and scheduled 1-2 months in advance based on numerous factors including road conditions and crew availability. Projects typically take anywhere from half a day to a full work week. Typical hours of work are 6 a.m. - 4 p.m.
What to expect
As with all construction projects, expect some dust and noise from heavy equipment, as well as minor disruptions to traffic.
Obey work zones
Always travel cautiously around work zones, observe all lane closures and directions by reader boards and flaggers. Expect 20-minute delays and detour. Use alternate routes if possible.
