This month, the mayor-elect and councilors-elect are participating in a variety of educational sessions covering government fundamentals, public meetings law, the city budget process, team building and civic leadership.

These trainings will prepare the new council to hold its first meeting and elect a new council president and vice president on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025. After, the 12-member council will have the opportunity to participate in work sessions and briefings on key topics. Finally, service area and program teams will host in-person tours of City-owned assets to enrich the onboarding process with examples of investments and policy outcomes in the field.

An important deliverable to help onboard elected officials is this briefing booklet. The booklet provides an overview of the City's new organization and clarifies the roles and responsibilities of the executive mayor and legislative council.

Here is a timeline of some past and upcoming onboarding activities planned to onboard Portland’s elected officials through early 2025.
