The future city administrator’s recruitment process
In January 2025, Portland’s newly elected mayor will launch the city administrator recruitment and appointment process. The new role of city administrator will work closely with the mayor to run the day-to-day operations of the City and provide city services. With the support of a leadership team, the city administrator will oversee and manage all city services for example, street maintenance, fire safety, sewer services and other programs our residents expect. While the roles and responsibilities of the city administrator are clearly outlined in the charter, the city is interested in learning what Portlanders expect from their future city administrator.
To help gather input from community, the City of Portland selected Motus Recruiting to manage an objective, impartial and nonpartisan process beginning this June. The Motus team will provide a choice of two virtual listening sessions and an online survey for Portlanders to voice their opinions on which key attributes would be most important for the new city administrator. This information will be included in the recruitment plan provided to the mayor who starts their term on January 1, 2025.
Planned Summer Activities:
- June 2024: Motus Recruiting will open a multi-month survey to seek insights from the community about the key attributes, skills, and experience they would like to see in the new city administrator. This is a great option for those unable to attend the June and August virtual listening sessions.
- June 2024: Motus Recruiting will host the first of two virtual listening sessions open to all Portlanders to share the key attributes, skills, and experience they would like to see in the new city administrator. The listening session will be recorded, and Portlanders are welcome to view the presentation.
- August 2024: Motus will host the second virtual key attribute listening session open to all Portlanders. This session will also be recorded for those wishing to view it later.
- September 2024: Motus will issue a draft report that showcases their findings
,and present these to the Government Transition Advisory Committee (GTAC) in fall 2024.
