Next steps for SW Strolls community walks

Updated 9/27/23

Thank you to everyone who participated in SW Strolls this year. Between April and September 2023, over 150 neighbors joined us for an event!

Beginning in October 2023, our partners SW Trails will be incorporating SW Strolls into their third Saturday programming. This means that the date for future SW Strolls will change.

The next SW Stroll will be on October 21, and meet in the same location at Gabriel Park. SW Trails will highlight a new route for this walk.

For future SW Strolls information check the SW Trails website. You can also join their mailing list for updates.

Thank you to everyone who made SW Strolls a success!

What is SW Strolls?

Graphic with people walking, green background

SW Strolls is a monthly community walk. Connect with your neighbors every first Saturday of the month and discover hidden gems in your backyard! We’ll enjoy nature along the #7 urban trail created by SW Trails, then take a stroll along the newly paved and accessible section of SW Capitol Highway, between Barbur and Multnomah boulevards. You can join for the entire walk or choose one section based on your comfort level. Section A is a little over a mile. Section B is a little under 2 miles. Whatever you choose, it's certain you will get your daily dose of community, exercise, and nature!

Who is involved?

Anyone is welcome to join a SW Stroll. Come once or come every month! These events were created in partnership with SW Trails, the Multnomah Neighborhood Association, Multnomah Village Business Association, local residents, and the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT).

What will a SW Stroll look like?

Join us on the first Saturday of the Month. We've designed this route to be flexible - join  us at any point.

9 a.m. Meet at Little Gabriel Park, in the southern parking lot off SW Canby Street. This is for Section A of the walk, a 1.2-mile urban trail.

10 a.m. Meet at World Foods (9845 SW Barbur Blvd.) for Section B of the walk, a 1.8-mile paved and accessible sidewalk. Or join along the route!

11 a.m. Enjoy a social hour in Multnomah Village after the Stroll to connect with neighbors.

After the social hour, return to Gabriel Park to grab your transportation or head home directly. We encourage attendees to walk or bike to Gabriel Park.

If meeting at World Foods on Barbur, please do NOT park in their parking lot. Please park in the business lot across the street.

Why join SW Strolls?

The City of Portland is completing the SW Capitol Highway infrastructure project. The project is a joint venture between the Bureau of Environmental Services, Portland Water Bureau, and Portland Bureau of Transportation with improved stormwater, drinking water, and street infrastructure. The finished product with include repaved vehicle lanes and brand new sidewalks, bike lanes, and multi-use path. Residents will now have new options for safely getting around their neighborhood and getting between Multnomah Village and the Crossroads area.

SW Strolls will not only highlight this new infrastructure but also highlight existing urban trails maintained in a partnership between PBOT and SW Trails. SW Trails is a community group that promotes walking and biking in SW Portland and leads monthly walks and trail maintenance work parties. There are seven urban trails identified, marked, and maintained by SW Trails. These trails often have hidden gems of beauty and discovery, or just a respite from the bustle of the city. Trail #7 runs adjacent to SW Capitol Highway and demonstrates multiple ways residents can get around their neighborhood.
