New and improved roadways and sidewalks
As you're riding along the Northeast Cully route, keep your eyes out for recently completed projects from The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to make streets safer and more welcoming to bikes, pedestrians and all non-motorized traffic.
- NE Killingsworth Street Lighting (2025)- This project will improve streetlighting on NE Killingsworth Street from 42nd Avenue to Lombard Street. Using a data-driven Vision Zero approach, PBOT has identified street lighting as a critical improvement to make these streets safer. Recent analysis indicates a number of our High Crash Network streets in some of our most diverse neighborhoods lack adequate street lighting. In addition, public engagement work by PBOT has found that people of color feel less safe walking on poorly lit streets. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025.
- Mason/Skidmore Neighborhood Greenway Project (2025)The Mason/Skidmore Greenway will be a new east-west neighborhood greenway connecting to existing north-south greenways at NE 37th Avenue, NE Cully Blvd, and NE 77th Avenue. Projected to be completed Spring 2025.
- 70s Greenway: Cully Connector (2025) PBOT and Metro are partnering to make NE 72nd Avenue safe and comfortable for pedestrians and people biking by building a neighborhood greenway through the heart of the Cully and Roseway neighborhoods from NE Lombard Street and Sandy Boulevard. Tentative construction to start in 2025.
- Newly paved roads on NE 55th/57th & Killingsworth (2021) - As recently as 2021, streets in the area around NE 55th – 57th & Killingsworth were gravel. Today, they are freshly paved and accessible for people using any mobility mode.
- NE 60th Ave Alternative Walkway (2021) - On NE 60th Ave, PBOT added a curb-protected walkway and speedbumps to slow traffic offering safe travel options for people outside of cars.
- NE Simpson Neighborhood Greenway (2020) - The northernmost section of the Sunday Parkways event shows off the NE Simpson Neighborhood Greenway, which was completed in 2018. For safety, the project added stop signs where previously there was no stop sign for any direction. At intersections, the city installed no parking signs near intersections to improve visibility for greenway users and drivers. Sunday Parkways attendees will get to see the new crossing at NE 42nd Ave that makes it safer and easier to cross the busy street. Lastly, the greenway includes additional speedbumps to help keep speeds low and comfortable for all users.
- New sidewalks on Killingsworth & Prescott (2020) - On the north/south portion of the route look for new sidewalks that were added on NE Killingsworth and NE Prescott streets! These sidewalks offer new, safe options for residents of the Cully neighborhood. The project also includes corner ramps that are ADA accessible and helpful for people with strollers or other accessories.
