New and improved roadways and sidewalks
As you're riding along the North Portland route, keep an eye out for recently completed projects from The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to make streets safer and more welcoming to bikes, pedestrians, and all non-motorized traffic.
N Willamette Boulevard Active Transportation Corridor Project (Fall 2026) - This project will add 3 new miles of protected bikeway on N Willamette Blvd, connecting to existing facilities on N Rosa Parks Way, to create a continuous 5-mile connection from St Johns & Cathedral Park to NE MLK Jr Blvd. In addition to bikeway improvements, this project will add new pedestrian crossings, design for safer speeds, and improve transit access for TriMet Line 44. This project is slated to be completed by September 2026.
Upper St. Johns & N Burr Neighborhood Greenways (2026) - As part of the North Portland in Motion Plan, project elements of the N Charleston Avenue and the north end of the N Burr Avenue neighborhood greenways were constructed in late 2024. The south end of the N Burr Avenue Neighborhood Greenway is currently finalizing plans and will be constructed in 2026.
Portsmouth-University Park Neighborhood Greenway (Spring 2026) - As part of the North Portland in Motion plan, construction for a new neighborhood greenway is slated for the Spring of 2026. This project will create three new neighborhood greenways in the Portsmouth and University Park neighborhoods to provide low-traffic and low-speed streets for people walking, bicycling, and rolling. The three new corridors are N Wall and N Fiske avenues and N Princeton Street. The N Houghton and N Wall intersection will have an improvement to make the crossing better. Neighborhood greenways are quiet, slow streets that prioritize people walking, bicycling, and rolling, and provide connectors between neighborhood parks, schools, and business districts.
N Willis Sidewalk Infill: N Newman Avenue to Chautauqua Boulevard (March 2025) - A new concrete sidewalk and ADA curb ramps on the south side of N Willis Boulevard between N Newman Avenue and N Chautauqua Boulevard were installed. An essential connection for students, families, and neighbors in the Portsmouth neighborhood. This project was completed in March 2025.
N Richmond Avenue & Crawford Street Local Improvement District (Spring 2025) - This Local Improvement District (LID) constructed street, sidewalk, stormwater, sanitary sewer, water main, and railroad grade crossing improvements on portions of N Richmond Avenue, N Burlington Avenue, N John Avenue, N Crawford Street, and N Decatur Street. The project was completed in Spring 2025.
Safe Routes to School Intersection Improvements: Multiple Locations (2024) - Crosswalk and ADA curb ramp improvement projects were integrated along segments of the Safe Routes to School priority network located within the Portland Public Schools (PPS) district. One location is at North Central Ave. and Charleston Ave. This project was completed in 2024.
North Portland Traffic Calming Project (2022) - Speed Reduction and Safe Routes to School programs collaborated to install traffic calming speed bumps and cushions on six streets within the St. John's neighborhood. Some of the locations include N Burr Ave from Lombard St to Bank St, N Ida Ave from Lombard St to Smith St, N Oswego Ave, and N Oswego Ave from Lombard St to Columbia Blvd. The project was completed in the Fall of 2022.
N Lombard Main Street Repair Project (2022) - The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has reconstructed the pavement and curb ramps on N Lombard Street from N Richmond Avenue to N St Louis Avenue through the heart of downtown St. Johns. This project was completed in the fall of 2022.
Event Accessibility
While Portland Sunday Parkways are community events designed to be accessible, the route and featured activations include a variety of surfaces and conditions. The following information will help you prepare for the day and what to expect.
On the route
- Along the route through neighborhoods, participants should experience low noise levels, except for the occasional cheering from bystanders.
- Volunteers are available at intersections. They are there to help you and direct traffic.
- Orange cones marking turns will be present throughout the route.
Entering the marketplaces
- There are multiple marketplaces along the route. Marketplaces contain a series of vendor booths, often on both sides of the street.
- Upon entering the marketplaces, the noise level and the number of people congregating around booths, eating food, and listening to music will increase. But this will not result in a "concert" level noise. Music volume will only be slightly above a conversational level.
- Bicyclists must walk their bikes through the marketplaces or park them at the provided bike racks.
- Sidewalks will remain clear.
