The City of Portland has announced the extension of the Sunderland RV Safe Park site through the end of June 2025. This extension reaffirms the City’s commitment to providing safer, more stable sheltering options for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Since its launch, the Sunderland RV Safe Park has provided a secure location with access to essential services, including sanitation, waste disposal, and outreach support. The site, managed in partnership with the Salvation Army through its contract with the Joint Office of Homeless Services, has been a critical component of the City’s broader efforts to address homelessness with compassionate and pragmatic solutions.
“I support extending the Sunderland RV Safe park site lease and invite proposals to safely and cost-effectively continue to operate the existing facility. RVs are uniquely vulnerable to fires, leaks, mold, carbon monoxide, and other hazards, which makes it all the more important that occupied RVs are in RV parks and not on the street,” said Mayor Keith Wilson.
“The Sunderland RV Safe Park has been a lifeline for many in our community, offering not just a safe place to stay, but a pathway toward stability. This extension allows us to continue providing dignity, support, and hope to those working toward permanent housing,” said Major Jonathan Harvey, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Cascade Division.
The Sunderland RV site, which was created through a collaborative lease agreement with the Portland Bureau of Transportation and the Port of Portland, was previously announced to be decommissioned by May 2025. The Port of Portland and PBOT are extending their lease agreement to allow the Sunderland RV site to continue operating on PBOT property.
“This will continue the important work of providing services that are restoring lives and dramatically improving the livability of surrounding neighborhoods. Let’s keep building on the positive outcomes from the Sunderland Site as we move people from chronic homelessness to workforce and housing stability,” said City Councilor Dan Ryan. “Thank you to the Port of Portland and PBOT for being long-term partners and to the voters who asked for these results when they supported the Metro Ballot measure in 2020.”
The site will continue to offer case management services to help participants transition to more stable housing situations. The extension is part of the City’s ongoing strategy to provide immediate relief while also working with the Joint Office of Homeless Services to transition participants forward in their journey to permanent housing. The site's extension will last through June 2025 awaiting a decision from Portland City Council on a budget package to be approved through the FY25-26 budget process.
