City of Portland Launches Emergency Overnight Shelter Participation Data Dashboard

The City of Portland today announced the launch of its new Emergency Overnight Shelter Participation Data Dashboard, an online tool designed to provide the public with transparent information about the number of people using the City's emergency overnight shelters each month.

The dashboard visualizes data collected from the City's emergency overnight shelter network, offering an accessible view into how shelter participation trends change throughout the year, especially during severe weather events.

Mayor Keith Wilson highlighted the significance of this data, noting that participation in emergency overnight shelters has grown 299% in the past year.

"This dramatic increase reflects both the urgent need for shelter and the City's commitment to meeting that need," said Mayor Wilson. "As we enter the coldest months of the year, our shelters are saving lives. This growth shows that more people are finding safe, warm places to sleep.  Our plan is helping prevent deaths on Portland's streets."

The dashboard is part of a broader effort led by Portland Solutions, the City's coordinating agency for homelessness response, to improve data transparency and public accountability.

"Transparency builds trust," said Skyler Brocker-Knapp, Director of Portland Solutions. "By making this data visible to everyone, we're not only showing the scale of our work but also empowering community partners and residents to understand where the needs are greatest. Data like this helps us make smarter, more compassionate decisions."

The Emergency Overnight Shelter Participation Data Dashboard is available now at www.portland.gov/shelterdata. The dashboard will be updated monthly to reflect the most recent participation figures from the City's network of emergency overnight shelters.
