The site plan for Menlo Park Safe Rest Village
The site plan for the Menlo Park Safe Rest Village

In early February 2022 the Safe Rest Villages team announced that Cultivate Initiatives would be the shelter operators for the Menlo Park village. Located in the Hazelwood neighborhood, this site serves as a critical part of the Safe Rest Village (SRV) system, with distribution of services throughout Portland.

“Our team at Cultivate is eager to continue the work of uplifting our houseless neighbors in East Portland,” shared Y'Ishia Rosborough, Housing and Sheltering Director at Cultivate Initiatives. “We are happy to provide this service in the community we proudly serve.”

Determining the layout for the Menlo Park SRV factored in the needs of various permitting agencies, utility connections, existing entry points in the parking lot, as well as slopes for placement of accessible features, and input from staff at the shelter operators, Cultivate Initiatives.

The SRV community engagement team and our partners at Cultivate Initiatives and the Joint Office of Homeless Services met with stakeholders monthly to update them on the process. Now that the shelter is up and running, The City, the Joint Office of Homeless Services, the community and Cultivate Initiatives are transitioning into negotiating the Good Neighbor Agreement.

Additionaly, the Hazelwood Neighborhood Association asked a number of questions of the SRV team shortly after the site was announced.  Below are links to the responses - dated early November 2021.  These were the best information we had at the time, but some things may have changed since that time (for example, we now have a shelter operator).
