Overview for getting a new bathroom in an existing space

Get an overview of the permit process and why it’s important to get a permit for your new bathroom. Our goal is to help you apply the right way the first time.
  1. Research

    Find out what permits you’ll need for your new bathroom project. Depending on your project, you’ll either go through the Simple Bathroom Program or the standard bathroom permit process.

    Doing a bathroom remodel? You may just need trade permits (electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permits).

    We’ll show you how to find all the information you need to research your project. 

  2. Prepare

    Gather and complete all the necessary documents for your project. Different projects will need different applications and forms, so be sure to check the details in this section.

  3. Apply

    Projects that go through the standard bathroom permit process will submit applications through DevHub, our online permitting system. If you’re using the Simple Bathroom Program, you’ll email us instead. Get more details on how to submit your application and pay your fees.

    In either case, we’ll contact you if we need more information or if you're ready to begin your project.

  4. Get permit and start work

    You can start construction only after we issue your permit. Rules vary by project, so be sure you know all the requirements before you start work.

  5. Get inspections

    All projects will need inspections before the building permit is officially complete. Inspectors check for compliance with code and plans, if there are any.

Why get a permit?

Getting a permit helps protect your safety, your investment, the environment, and your community.

  • Permits ensure that work is inspected and meets minimum safety codes. This reduces the risk of fire, flooding, or structural issues.
  • Inspections can catch small problems early, helping you avoid costly repairs or safety hazards later.
  • If you plan to sell your home, unpermitted work can delay the sale. Buyers, realtors, or lenders often require that all work be properly permitted and inspected.
  • Some insurance companies may not cover homes with unpermitted work.
  • It’s the law. The State Building Code requires permits for certain types of work.
