This significant day serves as a reminder for all residents to consider the sources of noise in their surroundings and to take proactive steps toward creating a quieter and more peaceful environment for all.

Noise pollution can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health, contributing to increased stress levels, sleep disturbances, and other health issues. By recognizing International Noise Awareness Day, the City’s Noise Program reaffirms its commitment to balance Portland's lively spirit, safety, and health equitably, promoting measures to mitigate noise impact across our communities.

Updating the City’s Noise Control Code, Title 18

In conjunction with International Noise Awareness Day, the City’s Noise Program is pleased to announce its initiative to amend the City’s Noise Control Code (Title 18). This effort aims to enhance the effectiveness of current regulations in addressing various sources of noise pollution while ensuring a balance between the needs of different stakeholders within our diverse community.

Public involvement is integral to the success of this endeavor, and the City invites all residents to participate, share their experiences and insights in upcoming community meetings, and provide suggestions for improving the Noise Control Code. It will be an open space for the public to provide input and feedback to the Noise Program.  We want to hear from the community on matters such as:

  • How has the current Noise Control Code impacted your daily life and well-being within our city?
  • In what specific situations or areas do you find the Noise Control Code either effective or lacking in addressing noise concerns?
  • What changes or additions would you propose to enhance the Noise Control Code's effectiveness in maintaining a peaceful and livable environment for all residents?

Additional details regarding meeting dates will be shared soon. Please note, that there are different upcoming phases in this project to amend the Noise Control Code. Visit our Noise Program website for announcements. You can also request to join our Noise Review Board distribution list to receive email notifications. Email us questions at noise@portlandoregon.gov.

Together, let us work towards a quieter and healthier future for the City of Portland.
