What to do with an expired permit or a permit about to expire

Guide
Construction, site development, trade, and zoning permits expire 180 days after the Under Review date. However, you can extend these permits before the expiration date. Expired permits may be reactivated within 180 days of expiration. Learn how to get a permit extension or reactivation.

Step 2: Review options

Each request will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Permit StatusRequest ExtensionRequest Reactivation
Active: Permit status is Under Review, Approved to Issue, Issued, or Under Inspection.X 
Abandoned: The permit application has not reached Issued status and there has been no activity for 180 days. X
Expired: Permit status is Issued or Under Inspection with no activity for 180 days.  X
Void: Permit status is Application for 180 days and fees unpaid - OR - in Expired or Abandoned status for 180 days.  X

Step 3: Submit request

What happens next?

After you submit a request, you will get an email confirming your permit status.

Policy for reactivation of expired or abandoned permits 

At this time, we are not expiring permits. Exception: Projects with approved Land Use (LU) cases must meet specified timelines to retain their LU rights. For more information, please review our land use policy related to expired permits:
