MEMORANDUM

DATE:  May 7, 2004

TO:  Water Bureau Engineering Services Staff

FROM:  Richard L. Steinburgge, P.E.

Chief Engineer, Water Bureau

SUBJECT:  Water System Standards for Electric Rail Projects

In accordance with the responsibilities defined by Title 21.04.070 of the City Code, I have reviewed the water system issues associated with electric rail projects and determined that our Electric Rail Standards should be applied to all light rail and streetcar projects.  It is our responsibility to ensure that the appropriate design and construction standards are applied to these projects.  Accordingly, project managers will ensure that this standard is applied.  Funding responsibilities for water system modifications and protection necessitated by applying this standard are a separate matter and should be allocated as provided by City policy.
