I. Boring/Test Holes

Borings and test holes are drilled holes or dug sampling pits in the right-of-way. They are to be plugged, sealed and resurfaced within 5 days of initial drilling or digging. They may fall under State well drilling regulations if they make contact with the water table or if water is taken from the borings.

Borings are typically used to obtain soil samples to design building foundations, or to test for possible releases from underground storage tanks or contamination of soil by hydrocarbons, or other hazardous materials.

Boring or digging for soil samplings in the right-of-way is a last resort and should only be permitted if the work cannot be performed on private property.
