On July 27, 2022, at approximately 8:17 p.m., Officers from the East Precinct responded to the 100 block of SE 126th Ave in the Hazelwood neighborhood. Multiple 911 callers had reported that a person was in the front yard of a house firing a gun. Call takers from the Bureau of Emergency Communications could hear shots being fired in the background of 911 calls.
Officers arrived and requested assistance from the Focused Intervention Team (FIT). During this incident, an officer from FIT fired their weapon, striking the suspect. Paramedics were on scene to render aid but the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Aaron Stanton, was declared deceased.
The involved member was Officer Joshua Dyk, a 4-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau.
On December 15, 2022, the Multnomah County District Attorney announced upon the conclusion of the presentation of evidence to a grand jury, the jury returned a no true bill, meaning the officer's use of deadly force was not criminal under Oregon law.
As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau conducts an internal review of the entire incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
