On Monday, May 6, 2024, at approximately 5:15 p.m., the Portland Police Bureau’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) served a search warrant at a home in the 100 block of Southeast 124th Avenue. The warrant was connected to a Major Crimes Unit Investigation. At approximately 6:34 p.m., during the service of the search warrant, an adult male fired at officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect. A SERT medic was on scene and immediately started lifesaving measures, but at 6:38 p.m., the suspect, an adult male, was pronounced deceased. A firearm was located near the suspect.
No officers were Injured In this incident. All four directly involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.
On May 6, 2024, the Multnomah County District Attorney's office announced upon the conclusion of the presentation of evidence, the jury returned a no true bill, meaning the use of deadly force by PPB members was not criminal under Oregon law.
As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau conducts an internal review of the entire incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
