Overview
The workforce Demographics Dashboard is a convenient, interactive data visualization of demographics for the Portland Police Bureau's current workforce. Demographics are reported using data maintained by the City of Portland's Bureau of Human Resources SAP software system. Data is representative of active employees as of the last day of the quarter (e.g., March 31st, June 30th, September 30th, and December 31st).

Technical Specifications
This dashboard has been customized to function on personal computers, smart phones, and tablets. For the best experience with the entire range of interactivity it is recommended you use a desktop or laptop computer.
No additional software is required to use this tool. The visualization runs completely within the internet browser using JavaScript. Most modern browsers automatically activate JavaScript; however, it may be turned off based on the security settings of your computer. The dashboard is an interactive data visualization. The interactivity allows users to filter information based on questions they hope to answer with the provided dataset.
The visualization and figures in the dashboard can be utilized as filters by clicking within the graphics. Multiple filters can be activated simultaneously by clicking among the different graphics. To deselect, click the selection again.

Field | Description |
---|---|
Sworn | A law enforcement professional who has taken an oath to support the Constitution and laws of the United States and Oregon. Sworn officers are responsible for serving and protecting their communities. |
Command | The Staff includes the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chiefs, Commanders, Captain, and Lieutenant sworn positions. |
Criminalist | The Criminalist position is highly specialized and involves technical criminal investigation work. Employees in this position are responsible for the development, identification, and maintenance of physical evidence. They can process evidence using chemical processes and also provide expert testimony in courts of law. Other duties include processing and classifying fingerprint evidence, and operation of video and photographic evidence. |
Detective | Detectives investigate major crimes, officer-involved shootings, and conduct internal criminal investigations. Detective work is highly specialized, encompassing the examination and evaluation of evidence to apprehend suspects and build cases against them. |
Sergeant | The first-line in supervisory work, employees in this class are responsible for direct supervision of officers and related support service personnel. Sergeants are directly responsible for the safety of the public through effective coordination of the work of subordinate personnel. |
Police Officer | This position is responsible for the protection of life and property through enforcing statutes and laws. They render emergency assistance to the public in a wide variety of situations such as performing standard crime and accident prevention duties, serving arrest warrants, dispatching police services, issuing citations for violations of city ordinances and state statutes, investigating traffic crashes, and initial investigation of crimes. |
Professional Staff | These positions are filled by non-sworn civilians within the Portland Police Bureau. Professional Staff act in a supporting role to sworn personnel. Positions include, but are not limited to records personnel, administrative staff, property and evidence staff, communications, auto servicing, and crime analysis. |
Race/Ethnicity | The race and ethnicity information presented in the dashboard reflects the 2024 revisions to the City of Portland's Office of Management and Budget's standards for maintaining, collecting, and presenting federal data. Sex | Sex is categorized as female or male as stated by the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) requirements. The classification is often understood through medical or legal frameworks, however, an individual's sex assigned at birth may differ from their current legal or gender identity. Gender is not captured in this data. |
Age | Current age of employee based on date of birth. |
