On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at a 4:06 a.m., detectives with the Portland Police Bureau’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with the assistance of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), started the service of a search warrant at a home in the 2700 block of Northeast 137th Avenue. The search warrant serviced Wednesday morning was affiliated with an indictment on the following charges: Encouraging Child Sex Abuse in the Second Degree (six counts) and Encouraging Sexual Assault of an Animal (one count).
At 6: 08 a.m., the suspect, identified as Patrick W. Myers, 44, of Portland, exited the back of the home armed with a rifle and he was shot by one member of SERT. The suspect was transported to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, a Multnomah County Grand Jury indicted Patrick Myers for Attempted Murder in the First Degree (two counts), Menacing with a Firearm (two counts), and Unlawful Use of a Weapon (two counts). The indictment is in connection to a shots fired incident in the Russell Neighborhood on May 29, 2024. Myers was released from the hospital and lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center on the above charges and warrants.

4:06 a.m. PPB’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with assistance from the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), begin the servicing of a search warrant
4:19 a.m. CNT begins more than an hour of communication with Myers in an effort to encourage him to surrender
6:06 a.m. Myers ends communication with CNT
6:08 a.m. Myers exits the home armed with a rifle and he is shot by a SERT member
6:14 a.m. Myers is taken into custody
6:15 a.m. A medic assigned to SERT begins rendering aid
6:25 a.m. Myers is transported to a local hospital
PPB’s Homicide Unit, along with the Forensic Evidence Division (FED) and others, responded to the scene to launch an investigation.
No officers were Injured In this incident. The officer involved, Officer Seth Wingfield, an 8-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting. On July 16, 2024, the Police Bureau received a memo from the Multnomah County District Attorney's office declining declining prosecution and a grand jury review of the officer who was involved in the shooting.
As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau conducts an internal review of the entire incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
