Driver Arrested for DUII After Crashing into PPB Vehicle

On Monday, August 31, 2026, at 6:38 p.m., an officer assigned to PPB's North Precinct was traveling westbound on North Princeton Street when he observed a Jeep stopped in the middle of the road with an adult male slumped over inside. The officer, a 17-year veteran of PPB, stopped to investigate when the Jeep accelerated at approximately 10 mph and crashed into the officer's vehicle. The Jeep backed up, at which point the officer activated his emergency overhead lights and the Jeep stopped.

Based on evidence discovered at the scene, officers suspected the driver, identified as 56-year-old Avtar Singh of Vancouver, Washington, might be under the influence of intoxicants. Singh consented to field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) on the following charges: DUII and Reckless Driving. 

The officer reported minor back pain as a result of the crash. Neither Singh nor his passenger suffered serious injuries.

Driving under the influence is a serious and preventable offense that places innocent lives at risk. PPB urges everyone to make responsible decisions: if you have been drinking, do not get behind the wheel. Find a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or make other arrangements to get home safely.
