UPDATE: NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd Reopens Following Fatal Crash Investigation

Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard is reopening to traffic following a fatal crash investigation in the King Neighborhood. The investigation into the pedestrian-involved crash continues.

Preliminary information is that the driver of a silver Ford Escape SUV was northbound on Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard when he drove up on the east sidewalk just north of Northeast Jessup Street and struck two pedestrians. A preteen boy was nearly struck.

The Ford Escape driver veered back into the northbound lanes of travel, continued north, sideswiping a Hyundai SUV stopped in the left turn lane at Northeast Ainsworth Street. The driver then went over a median north of Northeast Ainsworth Street and struck two southbound vehicles head-on, including a Buick sedan and a Toyota pickup. The Ford Escape stopped at that crash scene.

One adult male pedestrian died at the scene, just north of Northeast Jarrett Street. The other adult male pedestrian was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver of the Hyundai requested transport to the hospital by ambulance. The drivers of the Ford Escape and the Buick sedan were also transported to the hospital by ambulance. The involved driver of the Toyota pickup was not transported.

Initial investigation does not suggest that these crashes were intentional. The Ford Escape driver has two prosthetic legs, but it is unclear if that was a factor in the crashes. Additional investigation is needed to determine the cause of the crashes and whether there was any criminal culpability. A representative from the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation. No arrests have been made and no citations issued at this point.

The Portland Police Traffic Investigations Unit continues to investigate this crash. If anyone has information about this incident and has not spoken to police, please e-mail crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov attn: TIU and reference case number 25-212760.
