With the start of the new school year just around the corner, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) is urging drivers across the city to slow down, stay alert, and help keep kids safe as they return to classrooms. The first day of school is Tuesday, August 26 for many Portland-area students, with others beginning the first week of September.
As part of a citywide safety initiative, PPB officers will have a visible presence in and around school zones during the first several weeks of the school year. Officers will be conducting both educational outreach and traffic enforcement to remind drivers of reduced speed limits in school zones and to watch for children walking, biking, or riding the bus.
“We are excited that students are heading back to school, and we are committed to making sure they get there safely,” PPB Chief Bob Day said. “We’re asking drivers to do their part by slowing down, obeying traffic signs, and staying off their phones. A moment of distraction can change a life forever. Let’s all work together to protect our kids.”
PPB is proud to partner with local schools and other community organizations to support student safety and success. Officers will also be connecting with school staff and families during drop-off and pick-up hours, building positive relationships and reinforcing safe behaviors.
Key safety reminders for drivers:
- School zones are in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days, unless otherwise posted.
- Speed limits in school zones are 20 mph.
- Watch for crossing guards, school buses, and children near intersections and driveways.
- Avoid distractions, such as texting or using handheld devices while driving.
Together, we can create a safer environment for all Portland students as they return to learning. Let’s make this a safe and successful school year.
