Yesterday was nothing short of inspiring as we joined forces with Special Olympics Oregon, Gresham Police, Port of Portland Police, Portland Fire & Rescue, and the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for the 2025 Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR). Together, we helped raise nearly $4,000 for local Special Olympics programs.

This annual event is part of a global movement led by law enforcement, known as the Law Enforcement Torch Run—dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Special Olympics. Officers and athletes alike are honored as Guardians of the Flame, carrying the Flame of Hope into competitions at every level, from local to international.

This year’s event included a 3K walk and 5K run along the Columbia River. New this year: a friendly “Police vs. Fire” cook-off! Assistant Chief Chuck Lovell manned the grill for PPB while Battalion Chief Alan Ferschweiler repped Portland Fire & Rescue. Each was joined by a Special Olympics athlete, and participants voted for their favorite burgers and brats. In the end, Fire took home the win—and the trophy—but we’re already planning our rematch for next year!

A special thank you to everyone who came out to support our athletes. Your generosity and enthusiasm mean the world as they prepare to head to the state games. Let’s continue to cheer them on and build a more inclusive community—together.

In attendance were Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell, DA Nathan Vasquez, Gresham Police Chief Travis Gullberg, PPB Assistant Chief Chuck Lovell, and many more.
